Pemi Loop Prep Part 3: Food

Tomorrow is the big day! We’re aiming for a 7:00 departure from Lincoln Woods, so it will be a nice early(ish) start to the weekend. Before I leave I just wanted to do a quick post about the food I’ll be taking. Food is so much heavier than I realized! So here’s a little outline of what I did:

For breakfasts, I plan on eating instant oatmeal with peanut butter. I love peanut butter. It’s one of my favorite foods! I literally eat it out of the jar with a spoon, so I thought the little to go cups would be good for some extra protein before hitting the trail.

Lunches will be Clif Bars, Lara Bars, homemade trail mix, and beef jerkey. I’m not usually a huge fan of sandwiches, but I made a couple of PB&Js as well. The trail mix is made of almonds, chocolate chips, dried cranberries, cheerios, and cinnamon. Yum!

Dinners will be the Mountain House freeze dried dinners. I’ve heard good things about the Chicken and Dumpling and the Beef Stroganoff meals, so I guess we’ll see how they are! I’m a little skeptical, but I think that pretty much everything tastes better on the trail so hopefully that will reign true here.

Full disclosure, I took the picture above before weighing my pack the first time. It was a hefty 26 lbs after I put everything in it! I ended up taking a lot of less necessary things out and getting the total weight to 20 lbs, so I’m not bringing all of the food pictured. Being over-prepared is kind of my safety net, but I let go of that a little bit to decrease my pack weight. I think I still have more than enough food for the three days, and if worse comes to worst we will pass by Galehead Hut where they have food for purchase. The soup at the AMC huts is probably the best I’ve ever had, so I’ll probably get some on the way through either way!

So that’s that! I’m all packed and ready! It’s been a bit of a bumpy road preparing for this trip the last few weeks, but I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve been looking forward to these three uninterrupted days in the mountains for a while now. It’s going to be great to forget about everything back in the city and just live in the present taking in the sights.
